Zorndyke On Mayor Altar’s Edge Review

Destroyers Of The Faith 2012

Metal Hammer is proud to announce that legendary death metal innovators Cannibal Corpse will headline the first-ever edition of Destroyers Of The Faith, and will be bringing with them some of the biggest names in extreme music.

CC drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz says: “Just being a part of such a killer package and having these bands on there… It’s gonna be an exciting time and a great tour for the UK. I hope all the fans are really pumped for this one, because we definitely are! This is the first time that this is happening in the UK, and it’s very exciting.”

Joining the New York titans of gore on this history-making trek will be none other than bowel-exploding doom metal kings Triptykon, spearheaded by seminal extreme metal icon Tom G. Warrior of Celtic Frost and Hellhammer fame. And, as if that wasn’t enough, both bands will also be joined by veteran Norwegian progressive black metallers Enslaved and rising Arizona death metal favourites, Job For A Cowboy.

JFAC frontman Jonny Davy adds: “It’s the perfect tour! We still feel like we have a lot to prove, and this is the perfect tour to get in everyone’s faces.”

Finally, after a few years of preparation, here we have a split release by two Croatian grindcore bands exploring different angles of the genre in full 79 minutes blast. Desinence Mortification from Pula are probably the longest-lasting Croatian grindcore band after the legendary Patareni. On their side of this CD they offer around 30 minutes of old-school grindcore, including 6 tracks from their album from 2009, 7 tracks taken off demo from 2001, and 10 tracks recorded live in 1995. Highly recommended for fans of early Napalm Death, Brutal Truth, Fear Of God and Patareni. Intense and brain-melting! Giht Shasie from Split have been making experimental dadaistic digital grindcore from 2002 to 2005 and again from 2008 to present. Due to frequent break-ups, the band is sometimes reffered to as Pok. (Deceased) Giht Shasie. After their 2004 material, a few friends of band remixed their tracks and also did a few collaborations. Those friends are Electrocutionerdz (Canada), Discopath, DJ Implant, Gruuthaagy, Mad Shepard and Rural & 4 (all from Croatia). After a few mockery albums recorded in 2008, the band reappeared to play another gig of grindcore material. In April 2009, live tracks including old material, were recorded along with a few new songs. In 2010, new studio tracks were finished together with a remix by obscure Croatian electro-industrial pioneers Zidar Betonsky. All in all, their side of CD contains over 40 minutes of raw digital grind, evocating the most creative moments of works by Agoraphobic Nosebleed, The Locust, Phantomsmasher or Ministry. Sick.»

Compositions of Steve Lacy

Cuneiform Records is very proud to release Transmit, the second album from the Steve Lacy repertory band Ideal Bread.  The quartet of expert improvisers and composers includes baritone saxophonist Josh Sinton, cornetist Kirk Knuffke, bassist Reuben Radding and drummer Tomas Fujiwara; they adhere to Lacy’s unique vision while giving each composition new life with their unique approach to free improvisation and ensemble interplay.
If anyone deserves such a project, it is soprano saxophone innovator Steve Lacy (1930—2004).  He was an integral component of Cecil Taylor’s first unit, having emerged from the Dixieland revival of the late 1950s; he would then go on to liberate the soprano saxophone and reform the landscape of composition in improvised music.  “Steve Lacy is one of the most idiosyncratic composers in what we call free jazz,” states Josh Sinton.  “People who love free music may initially have a hard time coming to terms with his work, because they aren’t ready for the repetition and traditional rigor he brought to his pieces.”
Sinton has first-hand experience with Lacy’s brand of disciplined freedom.  The group has performed with Lacy’s widow and long-standing collaborator, cellist and vocalist Irene Aebi, and she introduced Sinton to some of the tunes on Ideal Bread’s second release.  However, Sinton’s relationship with Lacy’s work long predates that association. He studied with the revered soprano saxophonist from 2002—2004, as he finished up a graduate degree in jazz performance at New England Conservatory.  “I took lessons from him and served as his copyist, but I also would catch his shows as often as I could.  Often, we would just get together and talk.  I learned something from him on every occasion.”
Upon moving to Brooklyn, New York in the summer of 2004, Sinton would bring Lacy’s music to many of his introductory sessions.  “Not many people were playing Lacy’s pieces in New York at that time,” states Sinton.  “Really, it had to do with the paucity of scores, and that no one was transcribing what didn’t exist in score.”  Sinton proceeded to do just that, amassing a formidable library of transcriptions from which Ideal Bread draws inspiration.  The music is a continual source of challenge and inspiration to Sinton.  “I’m still mystified by Lacy’s approach,” Sinton muses.  “Some of his writing has the repetitive quality of a nursery rhyme, some of it is more akin to Webern or other atonal composers.  I’d watch Steve respond to questions about his compositional method by playing the compositions, and I am also coming to terms with the music by playing it.”  The group began as a trio, Fujiwara only joining after Ideal Bread’s first six months of existence.  The lineup has remained constant since, and the group has been performing regularly since 2006.

(L-R: Tomas Fujiwara, Reuben Radding, Kirk Knuffke, Josh Sinton)

Sinton compares Ideal Bread’s approach to Lacy’s championing of iconoclasts such as Thelonious Monk or Herbie Nichols.  “I listen to multiple versions of a tune, and I treat the repeated elements as the composition; the rest is determined case by case.”  Despite wishing to remain loyal to Lacy’s conceptions, the quartet’s 2008 eponymous debut (KMB) demonstrated with force that Ideal Bread is no mere group of imitators.  Transmit makes the case even more clearly.  Their rollicking reading of “The Dumps” combines elements from several versions of the tune, which Lacy performed in both solo and ensemble situations.  The trilled introductory passage is there, as might be heard on Lacy’s Sands rendition, but Ideal Bread adds a whimsically wicked vocal break before launching into the fleet-footed melody proper.  Lacy’s trademark near-unisons stand out as Radding and Fujiwara provide angular and rhythmically varied support to Sinton and Knuffke as they blow over this freebop masterpiece.  Yet, raw energy never precludes precision.  The four musicians play with the tightness and beauty of any classical music ensemble, most evidently in the Monkishly quirky polyphony of “Flakes.”  Sinton calls this early 1970s piece one of Lacy’s “greatest hits,” and it appears on many of his finest albums.  The present version is closest to that from Lacy’s Black Saint classic Window, but Sinton and company give the melody additional clarity with a march feel, eschewing the original’s loping swing.  Radding and Sinton breathe as one, their sound perfectly unified as Knuffke rolls out the head in gentle bursts.
Knuffke’s solo on “Flakes” references a tiny half-step motive from the tune’s intro, which, according to Sinton, is quite deliberate.  “When I’d perform with Lacy, he would have us craft our solos from material found in the composition, either directly or by implication.  That is often the approach we take.”  Sinton’s hard-driving solo on “As Usual” derives from the tune’s highly chromatic mode.  Far from impeding freedom, the practice increases the group’s focus, allowing them to expose and explore each compositional structure in minute detail while unifying each performance.
The disc exudes vigor as a live feel is constantly palpable.  A first-rate recording and mix captures each musician’s contributions in clear and present sound.  Every nuance in Fujiwara’s brush work carries “The Breath” airily along, and Radding’s resonantly introspective solo introduction to “Clichés” sings and grooves by turn before the band kicks it into high gear.  It all adds up to a wonderful journey through Lacy’s startling and diverse sound-world, one of which the composer most certainly would have been proud.

ABYSMAL DAWN: Set To Enter The Studio

Los Angeles, CA’s ABYSMAL DAWN
Los Angeles, CA’s ABYSMAL DAWN will begin recording the follow-up album to their Relapse debut Programmed To Consume this May at Trench Studio in Corona, CA with John Haddad (PHOBIA, INTRONAUT, HIRAX). The album will be mixed by Erik Rutan (HATE ETERNAL, VITAL REMAINS, CANNIBAL CORPSE) at his Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg, FL. A fall release date is expected.
ABYSMAL DAWN’s Charles Elliot commented on the upcoming album; “It’s always great to work with John Haddad, whom we’ve worked with on our previous two releases. This time we thought we’d try something a little different though as far as the mix goes. After to speaking to Erik Rutan at great length we know he’s the man for the job. He’s a living legend and knows how real death metal should sound! Everyone in the band is really excited to be working with him and we know this is going to be our most crushing release yet. We’ve been hard at work demoing all the material before we enter the studio and things sound amazing already! This will be our catchiest yet most extreme and technical release to date.
We’re also happy to be working with our new drummer Scott Fuller (ex-HAVOK, ex-SKITZO, ex-ASHES OF ICONS). Scott comes from more of a thrash background but was born to play death metal and has never had the outlet for that until now. So far it’s been a real pleasure to be in a band with someone with the same fire for this music as Mike and I again. A fitting replacement for Terry with even more chops to boot.”
Additional recording details will be made available shortly.

WINTERHORDE has posted two brand new songs

Israeli melodic extreme metal band WINTERHORDE has posted two brand new songs, “Tenth Wave” and “The Martyr and Deliverance”, on the group’s MySpace page. The tracks come off WINTERHORDE’s sophomore full-length album, “Underwatermoon”, which will be released later this year through an as-yet-undetermined label.

“Underwatermoon”, a conceptual album based on the story written by WINTERHORDE’s bass player and co-founder Celestial, was recorded partly with German producer V. Santura (DARK FORTRESS, TRYPTIKON, OBSCURA) and Morgenrrot, WINTERHORDE’s keyboards player. The CD was mixed and mastered by V. Santura at Woodshed Studio in Germany. The artwork was created by Gustavo Sazes of Abstrata Studio (ARCH ENEMY, OLD MAN’S CHILD, KRISIUN).

Commented Celestial: “‘Underwatermoon’ represents more-than-an-hour epic extreme metal art, blended with prog rock nostalgia and death-cold touch of North Atlantic Ocean. A must have for every open-minded metalhead who needs hunting journey through emotions in his metal.”

“Underwatermoon” track listing:

01. The Shell
02. Wreckages Ghost
03. Underwatermoon
04. Hunting the Human
05. Execution
06. And Flames Wept to Heaven
07. The Curse of Gypsy
08. Delirium
09. Tenth Wave
10. Smoke Figures
11. The Martyr and Deliverance
12. Farewell

The debut WINTERHORDE album, “Nebula”, was released in 2006 via Greece’s Burning Star Records.

The band was formed in 1999, under the name “Autumn Palace” in Western Galilee, Israel. After two years if self-searching and line-up changing, the band renamed itself into WINTERHORDE and recorded one-song demo “In the land of Everfrost”. In 2002 WINTERHORDE release a live recording, which has been totally sold out the same day of its release. Official 4-song demo “In Traditions of Winter” was released in 2004 by SRG productions and got a plenty of excellent feedbacks from all over the world. The demo sold very well and even was reprinted due to the big interest of fans. Opening for such monsters as Dark Funeral and Melechesh led WINTERHORDE to the top of local extreme metal scene.

In 2006, the band signed a deal with Greek Burning Star records. The collaboration resulted in mind blowing debut album “Nebula”, combining melodic black with elements of death and modern progressive metal. The album got very good response from fans and media. Straight after the release, WINTERHORDE supported the album with European “Bringing the Cold” tour alongside with Finnish Catamenia as headliners. The ride included participation in Transylvanian “Maximum Rock” festival, opening for W.A.S.P and Crematory. The tour established a good fan base all around Europe, although some individuals couldn’t believe that Israeli band played that kind of music.

Back to homeland, WINTERHORDE began composing a new material, based on the poem, written by band’s bass player Celestial. In the beginning of 2008, Burning Star records ceased to exist, leaving WINTERHORDE without a record deal. On November 2008, the band enters studio with German producer V.Santura, which worked with such artists as Dark Fortress, Obscura and Tryptikon among others, to record WINTERHORDE’s second album “Underwatermoon”.

“Underwatermoon” represents more-then-one-hour epic extreme metal art, blended with progrock nostalgia and death-cold touch of North-Atlantic Ocean. A must have for every open-minded metalhead who needs hunting journey through emotions in his metal.

California brutalists Gravehill recently took a break from working on their highly anticipated Ibex Moon Records debut to head down south to Texas for a string of shows with label mates, Hod. Safely home from the carnage and mayhem that ensued, vocalist Mike Abominator offered this summary of the mini-tour.
“The Texas shows couldn’t have been better. Hod kicked total ass and made us stay on top of our game! One of the best live bands we have seen and some of the best guys around in metal….PERIOD! It was an honor sharing the stage with them and playing our death metal for all those Texas maniacs! We met so many killer and diehard people in Texas. And I have fond memories of all three shows, but the San Antonio show was unforgettable due to the response of the crowd, the fights, equipment falling and going out, beer and blood flying, the fights, the mayhem, THE FIGHTS, ARGHHHHHH! What a show! Thank you to John/Ibex Moon and Beer Reebs/Hod for setting it all up! TEXAS! WE WILL BE BACK!”

Gravehill will also be among the many Ibex Moon acts contributing a song to the soundtrack to the upcoming indie horror flick, Afterparty Massacre. While said track might not be what Gravehill fans might expect from the band, Abominator guarantees brutality.
“We entered TRENCH STUDIOS for a weekend to do the exclusive track for the Afterparty Massacre movie soundtrack which Ibex Moon is putting out. We recorded the AC/DC song “If You Want Blood (You Got It)” for the release. It was Gravehill-ized so to speak, ha ha, but it came out GREAT. We even brought in our friends Shane from Phobia and Nick from Crepitus to scream and growl along with me on the infamous chorus! In the end, the song title, attitude of AC/DC and Bon Scott and even the overall performance of the song fit Gravehill PERFECTLY! Since we are the AC/DC of death metal! hahahaha”
In regards to the forthcoming album, the front man issued this update from the band’s own Hellheim Studios.
“Now we enter our studio/dungeon HELLHEIM STUDIOS to get the songs set for Pravus Tyrannis our 2nd album, and debut for Ibex Moon. Once we get the songs set, we will then enter TRENCH STUDIOS with Engineer John Haddad (who has worked with Phobia, Hirax, Abysmal Dawn, Final Conflict, Deathevokation) to record the eight songs of devastating and relentless death metal that this album will unleash upon the earth!”

BLOOD MORTIZED has parted ways with guitarist Benny MobergBLOOD MORTIZED has parted ways with guitarist Benny Moberg

BLOOD MORTIZED, the Swedish death metal band featuring former AMON AMARTH guitarist Anders Hansson (who played on AMON AMARTH’s first two albums, 1996’s “Sorrow Throughout The Nine Worlds” and 1998’s “Once Sent From The Golden Hall”) and CRYPT OF KERBEROS drummer Mattias Borgh, has parted ways with guitarist Benny Moberg “due to personal matters.” The group states, “This has nothing to do with the band, the material or the current members.

“Benny started BLOOD MORTIZED along with [vocalist] Mattias Parkkila back in 2007 and contributed with some heavy riffs on the early demos and debut album.

“BLOOD MORTIZED will replace Benny for the forthcoming brutal release.

“Benny will continue focusing on writing and producing music and is currently working on mixing BIRCH MOUNTAIN’s future debut album release. As of now in the planning phase is to reinstate the old beast machine MALFEITOR as a brutal, demo sounding, blood’n violence explosion!”

BLOOD MORTIZED’s self-titled debut album was released in April 2009 through Singapore’s Vrykoblast Productions.

Enter Sandman — Jazz Version

Despite the fact that METALLICA’s 1991 self-titled fifth album, commonly known as “the black album,” has sold a gazillion copies, the band’s hit song “Enter Sandman” is still considered to be too “hard” for most mainstream listeners.

In order to cement the LP’s status as the best-selling CD of the SoundScan era, the members of METALLICA have opted to produce a new version of “Sandman” that even your mom can “rock out” to. The results of this session can be heard in the YouTube

ICARUS WITCH have announced the addition of second guitarist

Pittsburgh traditional metallers ICARUS WITCH have announced the addition of second guitarist Ed Skero to the group’s ranks.

Commented the band: “Many people have mentioned over the last few years that they miss hearing ICARUS WITCH as a two-guitar lineup with the harmonies, rhythms and dual leads intact. Our position was that we also enjoy hearing those elements but did not want to inject a new, unknown member into an equation that was already running so smoothly on stage.

“While on the Paul Di’Anno tour [as the support act and Paul's backing band], we were fortunate enough to have that second guitar slot for Paul’s set filled by a phenomenal talent in Pittsburgh-area guitarist Ed Skero(a.k.a. Full Metal Duffy).

“Performing that challenging set every night with Ed on stage proved a couple of things:

a) We sound better with the additional guitar

b) We got along so well with Ed on a personal level that the chemistry was right to make the move.

“So join us in welcoming Mr. Ed to the inner circle. Once you hear what he will bring to the band in terms of classic style, vintage tone, tasty writing and Reiki healing prowess, it will be obvious that the WITCH is about to take it up a notch on record and on stage every night.”

ICARUS WITCH’s third full-length album, “Draw Down The Moon”, was released on February 9 through Cleopatra Records.

ICARUS WITCH was previously described as having a “heavy influence of IRON MAIDEN combined with good old-fashioned hard rock/metal production and great musicianship” by Don Jamieson, co-host of VH1 Classic’s “That Metal Show”. Perhaps this assessment helped land the boys the opening slot on former MAIDEN crooner Paul Di’Anno’s first American tour in over 15 years, which took place this past January/February.

ROYAL HUNT has signed a deal with Scarlet Records

Denmark-based hard rock/progressive metal band ROYAL HUNT has signed a deal with Scarlet Records for the European release of its new album, “X”.

ROYAL HUNT decided to revisit its roots and incorporate some of the musical values of the ’70s into its songwriting as well as — in order to reinforce that particular atmosphere — employing mostly “retro” means of production (recording in analog format exclusively being one of them) for its tenth studio album. The music has been described as “an interesting mix of what’s been tagged as classic rock nowadays (established by KANSAS, GENESIS, ELP’s earlier works and DEEP PURPLE, URIAH HEEP’s classics from the same era) and ROYAL HUNT’s trademark composition/delivery.”

Skyforger Will Release A New Album On April 26

“Kurbads”, the new album from Latvian pagan metal kings SKYFORGER, is scheduled for release in Europe on April 26 and in North America on May 11 via Metal Blade Records. The CD was recorded at the Latvian studio Lauska with the group’s own bagpipe player, Kaspars Barbals, handling engineering duties. The bandmembers also produced the album themselves to make sure the recording sounds authentic and “100% like SKYFORGER.”

According to a press release, “Kurbads” offers “the typical SKYFORGER fusion of various metal styles, like old-school thrash and heavy metal as well as Latvian folk music, all rounded up with the trademark SKYFORGER sound! The artwork was created by SKYFORGER guitarist Martins and is connected to the story of ‘Kurbads’.”

“Kurbads” track listing:

01. Curse Of The Witch
02. Son Of The Mare
03. The Nine-Headed
04. Bewitched Forest
05. In The Yard Of The Father’s Son
06. The Devilslayer
07. The Stone Sentinel
08. In The Underworld
09. Black Rider
10. The Last Battle
11. Kurbads

The song “In The Underworld” is available for streaming on the band’s MySpace page.

A studio video report, including audio samples and loads of details on the recording of “Kurbads”, can be viewed below.

SKYFORGER have been tempering their music in the smithy of the Thundergod since 1995. For the last decade, the band has been fighting under the flag of Latvian Pagan metal; an extreme blend of traditional Baltic folk music and various metal influences ranging from Norwegian-inspired black metal through to ’80s-rooted heavy metal. The band’s unique combination of ancient and modern influence has given them a wide appeal throughout both the metal and folk scenes, and has brought great variety to their songwriting over the course of the five SKYFORGER albums.

Through the years SKYFORGER has been busy on stages all over Europe. Behind the belt of SKYFORGER are already four European tours, many mini-tours and festival appearances and SKYFORGER is well known for their non-compromising live performances.
